Queensland Health today announced $180,000 funding to continue the local production of anantibody for Hendra virus in humans.Queenslandâ??s Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said last year the Queensland Governmentinvested $300,000 to the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN) at TheUniversity of Queensland to locally produce a monoclonal antibody for use as an experimentalHendra virus treatment.â??Todayâ??s funding announcement will help ensure the continued development of this vital drug,â? shesaid.Dr Young said the drug therapy will help improve the survival rate of people exposed to Hendravirus.â??The devastating effects of Hendra virus are clearly evident,â? she said.â??The disease was first detected in Mackay and the Brisbane suburb of Hendra in 1994 and therehave been a number of outbreaks in recent years. Itâ??s important that we are able to produce thislocally.â?AIBN Director Professor Peter Gray thanked Queensland Health for its continued support for thedevelopment of an emergency Hendravirus treatment.â??We have been able to use our people and equipment to work with Queensland Health to develop aprocess to produce the monoclonal antibody,â?? Professor Gray said.â??Stocks of the antibody are now available to use to reduce the progression of the disease in peoplewho have been exposed to the virus.â?Dr Young said the funding backed up Queensland Healthâ??s agreement with a United States agency, enabling The University of Queensland to continue to produce this therapy.â??It is very important for people to understand that this is not a vaccine as such â?¦ itâ??s aboutmaximising a personâ??s chances of survival once they have come into contact with this disease,â? shesaid.Since 1994 there have been 14 outbreaks of Hendra virus in Queensland, with seven peoplecontracting the virus. In 4 cases it has proven fatal.Hendra virus is not used at any stage of the monoclonal antibody production.

Queenslanders will benefit from a new online research database linking Queensland Health researchers with prospective participants â?? the first of its kind in the Australian public health system. The Database of Research Activity (DoRA) launched today is an important source of information for consumers to find out the latest medical treatments and ideas being trialled.  Queensland Health Office of Health and Medical Research (OHMR) Executive Director Professor Robin Mortimer said the database would create a central catalogue of research activity taking place across the state. â??The database highlights the vast amount of research currently being undertaken throughout Queensland,â? Professor Mortimer said.  â??It really shows how much activity is being achieved in Queensland public hospitals in collaboration with Queensland universities and other organisations. â??We know the key to improving health outcomes for all is investing heavily in health and medical research, and translating that research into better patient care.â?Â DoRA will also enable researchers in rural and remote areas of Queensland to connect immediately with fellow researchers in metropolitan areas. Queensland Health research fellow Shoni Colquist said there were many benefits for researchers as well as consumers.  â??I can now see what else is being done in the same field across the state and puts me in touch with like minded researchers,â? Ms Colquist said.  â??As a research fellow, I can be contacted about the research Iâ??m doing or I can point people in the direction of DoRA so they can learn about the research Iâ??m doing.  The database also means General Practitioners can search for projects that might benefit patients and organisations can find out relevant information to help other Queenslanders.   Founder of the Australian Stem Cell Foundation Greg Phillips said the database was a great source of information.   ”The database is the first step in bringing together those who are working toward a common cause,” Mr Phillips said

“It’s a fantastic way to contact and co-ordinate with others in the research community. This didn’t exist before and we now know who to contact. ”It’s a great networking tool and means of establishing relationships with key health researchers and other foundations.”  The OHMR has committed $20.55 million to innovation and translation health and medical health research, contributing to the Queensland Governmentâ??s vision to make Queenslanders Australiaâ??s Healthiest people by 2020. DoRA can be accessed by visiting http://access.health.qld.gov.au/DORA/view/search.aspx

Why Is It So Hard to Quit Smoking?

Mark Twain said, “Quitting smoking is easy. I’ve done it a thousand times.” Maybe you’ve tried to quit, too. Why is quitting and staying quit hard for so many people? The answer is nicotine.

Nicotine

Nicotine is a drug found naturally in tobacco. It is highly addictive — as addictive as heroin or cocaine. Over time, a person becomes physically and emotionally addicted to, or dependent on, nicotine. Studies have shown that smokers must deal with both the physical and psychological dependence to be successful at quitting and staying quit.

Smoking is expensive. It isn’t hard to figure out how much you spend on smoking: multiply how much money you spend on tobacco every day by 365 (days per year). The amount may surprise you. Now multiply that by the number of years you have been using tobacco and that amount will probably shock you.

Where Nicotine Goes and How Long it Stays.

The Mayo Clinic is a world renowned medical institution based in Rochester, Minnesota, in the United States. The medical practice holds both hospital facilities as well as a medical school. The formation of the Clinic was started in Rochester in the late 1800s when Dr. William Mayo settled there. Since then, Mayo has created additional hospitals in Jacksonville, Florida, as well as Phoenix and Scottsdale, Arizona. There are a number of smaller clinics and hospitals in Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin as well. These smaller clinics, along with the largest facility in Rochester, make up the Mayo Health System.

Another way in which Mayo is able to focus more attention on the patients is in how physicians are paid. Instead of the common procedure of pay based on how many patients are seen in a day, physicians at the Clinic are paid a salary that is not affected by patient volume. This allows doctors to spend as much time as they require with patients to provide an exceptional level of care. It also prevents doctors from performing unnecessary procedures or operations in hopes of more financial incentives. This could be why the Mayo Clinic is known for finding diseases that are missed by doctors at other health care systems.

The Neem tree is sacred in India because of its life-protecting properties. It is a powerful cleansing herb renowned for its ability to purify both the inside and outside of the body. It is an extremely bitter herb with powerful detoxifying properties. Its green leaves are full of cleansing chlorophyll and it acts as an invaluable skin and blood cleanser. It is very effective for normalising gut bacteria and reducing any imbalances that can cause bloating, discomfort and skin outbreaks.

Myths abound concerning the healing properties of Neem; its curative nature is said to have begun when a drop of nectar (amrita) fell on to it from the cup of immortality. Its bitter principle indicates its use in inflammations of the skin and digestive tract.

Common Name

Neem (E), Nim (H), Margosa (E)

Latin Name

Azadirachta indica – Folium, Semen, Cortex, Resin (Meliaceae)

Sanskrit

Nimba

Bio-medical Action

Alterative, anti-pruritic, anti-inflammatory, anti-pyretic, antiseptic/bacterial/fungal/protozoal/malarial, anthelmintic, bitter tonic, antacid, hypoglycaemic
Dosage

0.5–5g/day or 3–15ml/day of a 1:3 @ 25% tincture.

Notes

• Neem thrives as a large tree in well-drained soil all over India at up to 1000m. It is a tender tree not surviving in temperate climates where there is excessive rainfall.
• Often confused with Melia azadirachta (this is known as Mahanimba in Ayurveda). This is a tree with very similar properties that can survive in hardier climates.
• Used in the famous panchtiktagrita, a medicated ghee incorporating five bitter herbs used for inflammation in the skin, muscles and deeper tissues.
• Also a very infective insecticide/fungicide in the garden; spray an infusion on the plant for excellent organic results.
• It is a very strong herb. As with all very bitter and concentrated flavours it should only be used short term at high doses. Use for up to a month maximum. However, if used at a low dose the it can be used for longer.

Contraindications

High vata, wasting and debility. Any condition with cold signs. Considered to be bad for the heart and unpleasant for the mind by the Bhavaprakasha.

Why use Herbal Remedies?

Herbal remedies have been used for centuries for their healing and therapeutic properties. Different herbs are used in different cultures as a popular alternative to modern medicine. Herbs for Life focuses on traditional Ayurvedic herbs and the benefits they offer for common health conditions.

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is the ancient Indian philosophy of health and wellbeing. It means the ‘science of living wisely’. Using herbal treatments is fundamental to Ayurveda for staying at optimum health. It’s also an integral part of the relationship between humans and nature.

Ayurveda is the ancient Indian philosophy of health and wellbeing. It means the ‘art of living wisely.’ In simple terms, Ayurveda is a holistic system which guides us so that we can live a healthier and more balanced lifestyle. It recognises that we are all unique and focuses on food, lifestyle, massage, yoga and herbal remedies to suit our individual make-up.

Ayurveda is timeless – it has existed for over 4000 years but yet it still applies to modern day life. The key to its longevity is because Ayurveda is logical. An early description given in the Charaka Samhita (the earliest Ayurvedic literature) written circa 150BCE-100CE says:

“It is called ayurveda because it tells us which substances, qualities and actions are life enhancing, and which are not.”

The wisdom of Ayurveda encourages us to take responsibility for our own health according to the different stages of our lives, the seasons, and the environment we live, work and play in. These factors all have a big impact on our health and it makes sense to adapt our lifestyle accordingly so we can continue to live in harmony with our body and stay at optimum health.

Who are Pukka?

Our unique range of organic herbal remedies and award winning teas are based on the ancient wisdom of Ayurveda – ‘the art of living wisely.’ We set up Pukka Herbs to make the wonders of this wisdom easily accessible to everyone.

Pukka is a Hindi word meaning ‘authentic’, ‘genuine’ or more colloquially ‘top quality’. It comes from the Sanskrit ‘pakwa’ and this sentiment of offering the best quality organic Ayurvedic herbs and service is what we at Pukka Herbs are all about.

Those of you that are suffering from any of the various forms of eczema know how truly painful and irritating these symptoms can be. They can make you into a real eyesore that can be very distracting to others. Luckily there a number of treatment options available to suffers. Your physician can prescribe medications, ointments or lotions for your eczema. Many suffers reject out of hand homemade or over the counter treatments and tips, without even trying them. Give over the counter, homemade or alternative treatments a try. Their effectiveness just might surprise you.

Home Eczema Treatment

Very often you will find that home treatments or over the counter creams are effective for eczema. Antihistamines have been shown to reduce the effects of itching and associated inflammation. You can also get many lotions and special wraps at most pharamacies that are likely to prove effective. Providing your skin with a moisture barrier can be very helpful. You will have to be careful that the barrier cream is compatible with your skin. I have found other home treatments out there that people claim to be effective. Everything from covering the affected area with Crisco to green tea baths. Another barrier solution, coconut oil has been recommended. Putting on a barrier cream before exercising

Eating For Health

Food can be a two edged sword. Many eczema reactions can be attributed to certain foods. You may find that your body reacts with an eczema outbreak when you eat a certain type of food. Experimentation and good record keeping can show which foods that cause problems for you. On the other side of the food sword, many find that eating certain types of foods has been instrumental in improving or even curing their eczema. You can blend up many of these food remedies in your own food processor. An often used food concoction includes wheat grass, spinach, parsley, and celery. Another remedy often used is to take one tablespoon internally one of corn oil at meal times. This is said to improve other skin disorders as well.

Preventative Ideas For Home Use

A crucial part of eczema treatment is of coarse is the prevention of outbreaks. There are a few things that you can do every day to prevent eczema outbreaks. Selecting the proper mild locations, creams and soaps for your home, is a first place to start. This one action will surprise you in its contribution to reducing eczema problems. The avoidance of chemicals, harsh and mild, should be observed at all times.

When experiencing itchy episodes try to avoid the urge to scratch. This of coarse is easier said than done. Just rub genially areas of discomfort with the soft inside part of your hand. After taking a bath, gently use a towel to pat dry your skin. Apply a barrier lotion or cream to lock in the moisture.

Before you use up your doctors valuable time (and your money) investigate and implement some of the tried and true home remedies. There are an abundance of proven eczema treatments available to you. Remember that not every treatment will work for everyone. Experiment until you are happy with the results of your home eczema treatment.

Most orthopedic problems, like pain and stiffness in the joints, muscles and back, are not due to any specific disease in progress. Such problems are mostly symptoms of wearing, small injuries and tense muscles. The problems rise because of wrong use of the body during work and spare time. They also rise because of constant stress and lack of rest. However, if something is not done to treat such simple problems, they can over time evolve into a more serious condition or damage. Here are some simple advices to avoid or cure such orthopedic problems.

- Variate the way you sit or stand during work and other activities. Any position will exert pressure at certain areas of your body and restrict the flow of blood and lymph through these areas. There is no sitting and standing position that are so physiological correct that it should be held a long time. Frequent variations of your position will ensure that no body area will get a restricted blood flow over a long time.

- You should however avoid working positions that exert excessive burden on specific body areas, for example position where you must lean forward so that your back is heavily strained. Also avoid positions that heavily restrict the blood flow in a body area. If you for example sit on a too high chair, the front rim of the chair will press heavily up into your thighs and the blood flow to your legs will be heavily restricted.

- Take a break at regular intervals where you walk a little around. This can often be done without interrupting your work. Most people have activities during the day that require sitting, walking and standing. Just blend these activities throughout the day.

- When you are doing heavy work of any kind, do not have a heavy work load at the same body parts for a long time. Try to switch between task so that you variate your work load.

- Do not do heavy work or lifts that you are not accustomed to by training or practice. If such work is necessary, find someone to help you to alleviate the burden, try to divide the work in smaller pieces or find some tools to lessen the burden.

- Have some exercise for your muscle strength at lest every third day. Weight-lifting is a good method of training up your muscle strength. You do not need to train with very heavy heights to make your muscles and joints much more resistant against wearing and injuries. Moderately heavy weights that everyone can lift is good enough for this purpose. Sport activities like playing ball, skiing or swimming where you use your whole body will give the same positive effect and in addition they will strengthen your condition. Activities like jogging or cycling are good for your lower body, but they must be combined with activities that also strengthen your upper body.

- Take a few minutes to stretch out every day. Have also a good session of stretching exercises at last every third day. It is important to take time to stretch out every part of your body in every natural direction. If your back or some limb is excessively curved or bended toward one particular direction, it is important to stretch out enough time in the opposite direction. Yoga is a good way of stretching out.

- You must take some time each day to stress down to lessen unnecessary tension in your muscles. Sitting down some time and listen to calming music each day can help you to stress down. Some daily meditation is a good method of reducing the stress level. Taking a siesta in the middle of each day is still another method of relaxation and stress reduction. Having a regular good nights sleep of around 7 hours after each day will also reduce your stress level.

- Massaging stiff and painful areas can help to give relaxation, increase flexibility, increase blood flow and speed up the healing process. You can massage yourself or let a friend do it. Using a liniment or ointment that smoothes the massage movements, alleviate pain and stimulate blood circulation will increase the efficiency of the massage. You should always massage in the direction of the blood flow. During the massage, use light pressure at the beginning and gradually increase the force, but do never massage so hard that it feels uncomfortable.

- A good diet will give your joints and muscles greater resistance against damage and stimulate to faster healing of small damages that occasionally occur. Food containing omega-3 fatty acids are especially valuable, like fish, seafood, marine oils, flaxseed oil and olive oil. Certain supplements of natural substances and herbs may give valuable stimulation of the healing processes in muscles, joints and bone structures, for example: marine omega-3 poly-unsaturated oils, glucosamine, chondroitine, hyaluronic acid, methylsulfonylmethane, vitamine-E, vitamine D, vitamine B3, vitamine C, coral calcium, magnesium, boron, silica, Boswelia serrata, ginger, cat’s claw, turmenic and grape seed extract.

He stresses the underlying thing of a regulatory imbalance. And he suggests herbs like thyme, with the intention of be inflicted with a tonic effect, would be a helpful support. Particularly in era of mental or corporal stress, or with surgery, or approximately other illness with the intention of could be inflicted with diluted the body, like the bug. He does say with the intention of behavior must single be pro a restricted calculate. He makes the top with the intention of life insurance statistics indicate with the intention of public with hypotension on mean live longer than public with blood pressure in the habitual range.

Rosemary is quite a diverse herb. It is used effectively pro headaches, particularly migraine. The herbalist Michael Tierra writes with the intention of many headaches are caused by stomach problems, and with the intention of the precarious oils in thyme be inflicted with a very beneficial and kind effect on the stomach. Rosemary furthermore contains salicylic acid, which is the precursor of aspirin. Though being in sow form it doesn’t be inflicted with the long stretch feature things.

Rosemary is exceptional pro the passage, and is often prescribed by herbalists pro circulatory weakness (Fisher & Painter). The committed constituents renowned as the flavanoids are sensitivity and blood vessel tonics. So, as well as hypotension, thyme is suggested pro poor passage, hypertensive headaches, and arrhythmias.

Eczema All About it and How to Treat it

Eczema is an often contracted skin infection that can be found in young and old alike. It is a problem of the upper layers of the skin and is in fact a relative of dermatitis. It can manifest as persistent rashes, or as discoloration and dryness, and is common in children.

In most people the condition will retreat and disappear as the patient grows older, but it is frequently known for Eczema to recur over the lifetime of the sufferer. There is currently no certain cure for eczema, but there are treatments one can use that will alleviate the symptoms and help suffering in the patient.

Types of eczema and the causes:

There are several different versions of eczema and a mixture of different factors that influence the development of the condition.

Atopic eczema is the most common form of the condition, and is very prominent in people who are susceptible to allergies. It will be seen in the very young and affects the face and neck, hands and feet, and the ankles and torso. When it manifests in adult patients it is found in the bends of the joints.

Contact with many products detergents and soaps and often water can end in Contact Dermatitis as the skin reacts to the substance, and this variety of eczema can also be as a result of an allergic reaction.

Sebhorrheic Dermatitis is a form that affects children, and results in infection of the skin on the head and, in many cases, the eyebrows, while Asteatotic Eczema appears as dry skin that has evolved into full blown eczema. This variety affects generally the elderly and is felt most during times of cold and dry weather.

Another type of Eczema common with older patients is Varicose Eczema which appears on the skin around the ankles. Varicose Eczema will result in ulcers if not thoroughly treated and is highlighted by itchy and inflamed skin in the affected area.

The other version is Discoid Eczema, a variety that is common in middle aged men and occurs as rashes pink or red, or sometimes brown which become stiff, itch and begin to weep.

Factors triggering eczema:

Many of the factors instrumental in the appearance of eczema are those that also cause allergic reactions, in particular soaps and perfumes, pollen and dust mites, rough clothes and bubble baths and very often cosmetics. Diet can also be instrumental in setting eczema in motion as a variety of foods have been shown to induce allergic reactions, and it can sometimes be the case that contact with water, certain weather conditions and temperature fluctuations are the culprit.

The reason is very often different in each occurrence, and the above are just a selection of the more commonly seen ones.

The usual symptoms of eczema:

There are a lot of symptoms associated with the onset of eczema, but each patient may display unique symptoms on a case-by-case basis depending on severity and environmental conditions. As eczema is a skin problem it is fair to say some level of irritation will occur, especially if the patient scratches the skin.

The most frequent symptoms of eczema are the itching and irritation often difficult in nature along with dryness of the skin and blistering, plus occurrences of cracked skin and evident inflammation.

In rare cases bleeding might occur and a burning sensation could also be a symptom of Eczema. It is also not uncommon for the skin to change in color or swell.

Treatments for Eczema

As eczema occurs for very different reasons in each patient it is not yet possible to discover a trouble free cure for the condition. One sufferer will react in a different way to many factors, thus making successful treatment in one case unsuccessful in another.

The purpose of treatment is generally to give the skin back its original look and to minimize any visible scarring, treat the symptoms and try to reduce the chances of recurrence.

A well intended skin care regime is a very good bar against eczema as keeping the skin clean and in good health is important in preventing infection. Regular bathing is also sensible as the moisture is important to the skin for successful survival. Keeping the skin moist with recommended moisturizing creams is also a very effective method of treating eczema.

Furthermore, keeping sweat to a minimum, avoiding very dry places, checking that clothing is well rinsed following washing and avoiding any things that contain alcohol are prescribed courses of action.

Keeping stress levels under control, sleeping properly and keeping the mind and body working properly have also been proven to help eczema sufferers, while the most important thing to remember is to try as hard as one can not to scratch the problematic area as this simply adds to the problem.

Not but fifteen or twenty years ago was there a roaring HIV epidemic. IT was once thought to be the bane of mankind’s existence and that it would proliferate and multiply beyond the control of our society’s devices. Yet now we have medications that can keep HIV at bay and significantly increase the life span of those infected.

In addition to these innovations are advancements in surgical settings. Surgery is one of the most important aspects of medical practice and many improvements and innovations have been introduced that have worked to save lives and also save the welfare of those suffering from deprecating problems. Now there are automated processes that can work in areas inside the body that humans could not reach themselves, going to the root of injuries and illnesses that was never before possible.

Although malignant cancers are still incurable, treatments have become much more powerful than they had used to be. Now cancer patients are able to explore both medical and homeopathic mediums by which their disease is kept at bay and they are able to continue fighting.

The field of medicine is arguably the most important field of work. The health and welfare of each citizen is extremely important. Without proper health care injury, illness, and disease would spread unabated. Not only would productivity decrease drastically but many people across the country would suffer greatly.

Due to the importance embedded within the field of medicine, correlated to this is the importance of medical equipment innovation. Medical equipment and technologies are what allow doctors and medical staff to assist people with and are an integral part of every hospital and doctor’s office.

One of the most important innovations within the field of medicine has been the synthesis of brain scanning equipment. Equipment such as PET or CAT scans give doctors the ability to locate subtle injuries that can have huge implications on one’s health. These pieces of equipment save lives by locating tumors or lesions at an early stage so that doctors can act accordingly.

Medical technologists continue to work towards creating better brain analysis equipment. As these technologies progress people will reap the benefits as doctors will be able to make more accurate and detailed examinations concerning the brain.
